NEWSFLASH: Birth control won't help you get a real menstrual cycle!

It can prevent you from getting pregnant... ​But other than that, it’s really bad for your hormonal health.

Taking the Pill won't give you a real period. It simply gives you a withdrawal bleed that lulls you into a false sense of security about your hormonal health.

In fact, 37% of women who start birth control for irregular cycles won't get their period back when they stop the Pill!

Let's be honest... having a period every month is kind of annoying. #realtalk

Yes, they're a natural part of a woman's life and they're a sign that our bodies are fertile. They're what makes our bodies so different from men's, and when our hormones are in balance we feel amazing.

But frankly most of us wouldn't complain if they simply disappeared.

And while it's tempting to think that a missing period is a great thing, (no PMS! no mess! save tons of money on tampons!)  -  you and I both know that it's a good indication that something deeper and more serious is going on with your body.

Maybe your doctor told you if you don't get your period back ASAP, you'll be at higher risk for...

Yikes! Why does this happen? 

Your cycle is an indication of how well your ovaries are producing sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

When your hormones are at a healthy level, it means your body is getting everything it needs to thrive and function at its best.

And healthy hormones show through in lush hair, glowing skin, great energy and a healthy sex drive.

Your Body Just Wants To Survive

Think about it for a moment from a biological point of view.

When your body is stressed or malnourished in any way, the first thing to go is your fertility.

After all, having a baby would be a bad idea if there's a famine or war going on. (Look at this from an ancestral health perspective!) 

Your body knows it would be wiser to spend its nutrients and energy on more important things like brain health, organ health and the fight-or-flight response.

These things are crucial to our survival, while menstruation and fertility is not.

This is why I believe that we women should use our menstrual cycle as a barometer for our health.

If it’s not happening at all (or it’s extremely irregular) that is a strong signal that the body is stressed out in some way.

Maybe it’s too much exercise, too much stress, or the wrong types of food. Or maybe it's a gut infection or autoimmune issue.

Whatever it is, it's a reliable sign from your body that something is off.

And if we want to avoid the long term health risks I mentioned above - and generally live a more vibrant and healthy life - we need to make sure our hormones are firing on all cylinders.

It doesn't matter if it's only been a few months or even a few years since your last cycle.​

Getting it back - without resorting to The Pill - is imperative for your long term health.

4. REPAIR - For some women, amenorrhea recovery goes way beyond eating more and exercising less. Once you've dealt with those basic changes, you may need to dive deeper into functional treatments, including gut, thyroid, and immune system health.

This is a very emotional topic for me and for those of you out there who have struggled with this surely understand. I had unknowingly been suffering from hypothalamic amenorrhea for years, thinking the lack of period was just a nice perk of my IUD, as my OB-GYN had suggested. Only after I had it removed when my partner and I decided we wanted to start trying for a family did I realize that that this was not the case. As you can imagine and as I’m sure many of you know all too well, the heartbreaking thought of not be able to bear children was devastating. Doctor after doctor, test after test, I found myself at a loss for the root cause.

I found Laura’s podcast and immediately realized she understood very well the symptoms I had been experiencing. The recommendations learned through the podcast helped me to guide my doctors towards the appropriate lab work to confirm the issue. Absolutely not! Many of the health risks associated with amenorrhea, particularly loss of bone density, are more related to malnutrition and stress than they are to low hormone levels. In fact, there's no evidence that hormonal birth control improves bone density in premenopausal women with hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Yes! While being underweight increases your risk of amenorrhea, you don't have to have a weight problem to lose your period. Many of the women I work with on a regular basis are not considered underweight by any means, and most of them eat what they feel is a "healthy" diet.

Definitely. I've worked with dozens of women struggling with what's often called the Female Athlete Triad. My 4R Protocol for period recovery not only helps them repair their hormones but for many, actually improves their athletic performance and energy levels.

Absolutely! The recommended diet and lifestyle changes in this program can be easily tailored to the needs of a woman with PCOS, and I'll teach you how to do that in this program. This program is especially useful for women with non-insulin resistant PCOS, which accounts for about a third of women with PCOS. Watch Eann's story above to learn how she got her period back with PCOS!

Possibly! While this program will not reverse menopause, many women with a history of amenorrhea are still able to get their period back at a later age. I can't guarantee a return of your cycle, but I'm confident that the diet and lifestyle information in this program will improve your overall health and increase your chance of a recovered period.

Probably not.  This program will most likely not reverse premature ovarian failure, unfortunately. However, there are many women who have been inaccurately diagnosed with POF when they truly have HA, and if that's the case this program will help!
